World Heritage Solidarity Day
Every month of September, Vigan City Celebrates World Heritage Cities Solidarity Cultural Festival. It aims strengthen the pride in the city's culture, and advocate friendship between countries.
It is the city’s way to help preserve the union of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)-listed World Heritage Cities called the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC) established on September 8, 1993. For this year’s celebration of World Heritage Solidarity Cultural Festival – this city’s celebration of the solidarity of World Heritage Sites enlisted by UNESCO, a Zarzuela Ilocana entitled Tres Patrimonio was staged on September 2 in Plaza Salcedo, while another zarzuela that showcases the life of Fr. Jose Burgos will be presented at his house on September 19.
Vigan City Mayor Juan Carlo S Medina last week, said that for this year, the celebration will be different because of the staging of the zarzuela in these historical sites. He added that Plaza Salcedo will not only be known for the monument of the Spanish conquistador, Juan de Salcedo, or the famous dancing fountain, but also as the plaza where the Spanish soldiers garroted the Philippine’s only woman guerilla, Gabriela Silang who is from Santa town in this province.
This celebration reminds us that we must preserve our Ilocano Culture and we must be proud of it.
